Week 8

Happy Thursday members! Here’s what’s in your baskets this week:

-Various squash

-Green and purple beans

-Cucumbers

-Cherry tomatoes

-Banana peppers

-1 head of Summer Crisp lettuce

-Turnips

-Beets

The recipe of the week uses turnips. They will cook similarly to potatoes, and can be applied in many of the same dishes. Before my grandfather passed away a couple of years ago, he would grow tons of them, and my Gram would put them in with a roast or a stew just like potatoes. If you want to eat them as a side dish, be aware that they have a bit more of a peppery bite than potatoes do. They definitely benefit from some paprika!

Roasted Turnips and Potatoes

Ingredients

-2 turnips

-About 1 lb halved baby Yukon Gold potatoes

-2 tbsp olive oil

-2 garlic cloves, minced

-tbsp. fresh parsley

-1 tbsp lime juice

-1 tsp kosher salt

Directions

-Preheat oven to 450.

-Heat oil in a small skillet over medium heat. Add garlic and paprika, and cook until fragrant (about 2 minutes)

-Peel turnips and cut into wedges. Add to a large bowl along with potatoes. Add the garlic oil to the bowl and toss to coat.

-Spread evenly on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

-Bake about 20 minutes until golden, stirring halfway through.

-Toss with fresh parsley, lime juice, and kosher salt.

In other farm news, it seems we will have ripe tomatoes next week! Since the weather has turned sunny and humid, they have started to ripen. It looks like the cucumber vines can’t handle being in the middle of the high tunnel instead of on the edge, lesson learned! They may be done in the next week or so, so savor them while you can!

We have a ton of peppers starting to come on finally, even on the ghost pepper plants! (Okay so I only have 2 ghost pepper plants and I’m supplying those upon request only, since they are super hot. I have habaneros for some heat, but not ghost pepper level. So when I have them I’ll let you know and you can request them!)

I have to tell you all that I completely forgot I had carrots out. 100% forgot, until I started weeding the other side of the turnip rows and lo and behold, beautiful carrots tops! Not sure when you will have those, but hopefully soon!

I am getting ready for the Henry County Harvest Showcase on the 27th, which is the start of my show season. I’ll be there with my artisan goodies, including herbal bath products, chicken feed bag tote bags and accessories, and barn quilts and farm signs! This doesn’t really have anything to do with the CSA, but I wanted to give you all a heads up if you like summer festivals!
