CSA Week 10

Happy Thursday! Can you believe we are already halfway through the season?? Maybe it's just the odd climate we have going on these days, but it doesn't seem to me like it should be halfway over yet. Here's what you have this week:

  • Zucchini

  • Summer squash

  • Sweet banana peppers

  • Bell peppers

  • Summer crisp lettuce

  • Green beans

  • Tomatoes: red slicer, Roma, sun gold, yellow pear

Just as a side note- please excuse the makeshift containers. My quart and pint containers I ordered a couple weeks ago are slower than usual coming in. But hey, reduce, reuse, recycle!

Crispy Fried Green Beans

Any other PF Chang's fans out there?

Ingredients:

SRIRACHA MAYO

  • 1 cup mayonnaise

  • 2 tbsp Sriracha

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp onion powder

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

FRIED GREEN BEANS

  • 1 1/4 lb fresh green beans trimmed and well dried

  • 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour

  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper

  • 1/2 tsp cumin

  • 1/2 tsp fresh ground black pepper

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1/2 tsp onion powder

  • 1 cup beer

  • Vegetable oil

Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the mayo, sriracha sauce, salt, garlic powder and onion powder.

  2. Place a 1/2 cup of flour on a shallow plate for dredging the green beans.

  3. In a large bowl whisk together remaining flour, cayenne pepper, cumin, black pepper, salt, garlic powder and onion powder. Slowly stir in beer; mix just until combined.

  4. In a large dutch oven or heavy stock pot heat 1 inch of vegetable oil to 375 degrees. Dredge the green beans in flour on shallow plate.

  5. Using tongs, dip the floured green beans in the batter and gently into the oil.  Fry until they are golden brown and crisp, turning once- about 2-3 minutes.

  6. Drain on paper towels.

  7. Serve warm with sriracha mayo.

This week has been super productive! Everyone got a little bit extra this week because the cherry/pear tomatoes went crazy and so did the second round of zucchini. I got some feedback last week that the green beans were pretty tough, so I harvested and packed them differently this time. Thank you so much for that feedback, I always appreciate it! If anyone has any other suggestions or issues or anything please don't hesitate to let me know, because everything I do is for you guys. I want to make sure you guys like what I'm growing and it gets to you in good condition. If I need to change something I definitely want to know, and trust me, you're not going to hurt my feelings! :)

I finally, finally got the last of the tomato plants trellised over the weekend. Thank goodness because they were worrying me to death. This is only four rows, but they are so nice and neat! There are two more rows that you can barely see over to the right, and a couple hundred more plants in the tunnel. I still have to stay on top of them every week, but the hard part is done.

The eggplant may have gotten stunted in the freeze this spring, but that isn't stopping them! They are about 12-18 inches shorter than they should be, but that isn't stopping them! I really wasn't sure how they would produce being so short, but nearly all the plants have a big ol' eggplant growing on them! I was pretty excited to see that this week!

Friendly reminder to wash your produce! That includes your tomatoes (just not until you're ready to eat them).

Have a great week!
